Xitel Hi-Fi Link iPod Dock [£70]

I've seen a wealth of iPod docks with built-in speakers lately, but here's one that uses your existing hi-fi system instead. What you're getting here with the Xitel Hi-Fi Link is a preamp, charger and remote control for your iPod, allowing it to become another component in your main system.

It's a handy package, boosting the output level of your iPod to thatof a regular hi-fi component, and adding wireless control from the comfort of your couch. You can even plug a pair of powered speakers straight into the unit if you're short of amp inputs.

The remote allows you to access track and playlist selection, play, pauseand on/off functions. The Xitel is compatible with all third and fourth generation iPods, and also includes a composite video output for viewing images on a TV.

In action, you find that the price for all this convenience is aome audio clarity. There's a marginal sense of ompression, making mixes sound more cluttered. But for convenience alone, the Xitel is still worth considering

Pros

  • Louder than connecting your iPod straight to your hi-fi directly

Cons

  • Marginal loss of clarity

  • Price

Verdict

The Xitel Hi-Fi Link isn't a bad product, but Apple's own solution is less than £50.
