JBL On Stage iPod Dock [£130]
JBL On Stage's fresh, circular design houses four neodymium drivers- two either side of the docking cradle. A quick glance at the rear confirms that the On Stage can charge your iPod and synchronise with your computer. There's also a line input to use with an external source.
As with most of the other docking systems, you're provided with various cradle adapters. They're easy to swap round and our iPod fits snugly in place. On the downside, the On Stage is a mains-only system, and there's no remote control.
Spin some tunes and you're greeted with a decent spread of sound. There isn't quite the focus and precision of the best, but if you're moving around the room, that's not such a problem. Detail levels are fine for the money, though things do sound a touch thin at times.
The JBL On Stage is an eye-catching alternative, but I'd just like a bit more quality across the board. Some may choose it for its unusual looks, but there are better options elsewhere.
Pros
- Excellent build and stylish design
- Fair spread of sound
- A detailed and dynamic delivery
- Compact and stylish design
Cons
- Mains only
- Control would be nice
- Sounds relatively thin
Verdict
The JBL On Stage looks and feels the business, but lacks the ability and user-friendliness of the best.
