Apple iPod Hi-Fi [£249]
It's taken a while, but Apple has reacted to the plethora of 'for iPod' speakers lining not only high street shops, but also its own online store. So hail the Apple iPod Hi-Fi.
The Apple iPod Hi-Fi is plain ugly depending on your point of view surprisingly from the makers of the beautiful iMac, the cute Macmini, and the iconic iPod. Apple supplies a remote, and also includes and analogue/digital optical input, but curiously there's no video out.
Arguments over design aside, Apple's speaker system goes very, very loud. However, loud does not necessarily translate to good. Playing even Apple Lossless (best-quality) files, the Hi-Fi sounds compressed, lacking especially top-end sparkle.
And as for timing, the Hi-Fi falls well short of the Monitor Audio i-Deck, while its midrange sounds capped. And it fails to disperse sound widely around the room. Judged not only by its maker's high standards, but also by its leading rivals' efforts, this system is neither Apple nor Hi-Fi.
Pros
- Brand Appeal
- Battery or mains
- Goes really loud
- Some may like the sturdy looks
Cons
- Lacks the detail, pace and refinement of key rivals
- Many might hate the sturdy looks
Verdict
This Apple iPod Hi-Fi system is definitely not good enough and does not live up to expectation.
