Kensington sx2000 iPod Dock [£100]

I call the Kensington sx2000 the little thing that separate the winners from the losers. Well, it would be very harsh to call this Kensington system a loser - however, it's primarily a lack of 'little things' that prevents it from achieving coveted 10 star status.

The most obvious oversight is the lack of a remote control. Also, the actual shape of the unit seems a touch baffling. It uses speakers from flat-panel specialist NXT, so has a super-slim speaker panel. However, the base reaches back a long way - so the unit still takes up a fair amount of space.

Pop in your Nano, flick to a fave track, and the sx2000 delivers sound of a greater scale than most rivals and it also goes louder. However, there's a lack of sparkle to the delivery, resulting in an occasionally dull experience. This is a neat solution, but it's not yet the complete package.

Pros

  • Flat-panel speaker gives a big, room filling sound that goes loud

Cons

  • Lacks excitement

  • Mains only

  • Has no remote

  • Needs extra space

  • Doesn't sync

Verdict

The Kensington sx2000 has lots of positives, but a few negatives, too.
